Caregiver Experience in Caring for the Elderly with Decreased Memory
Backgound : Caregiving to family members with mild cognitive impairment is a unique experience. For the caregiver other than a positive impact as an affection to the elderly, also gave negative effects that increase caregiver burden. Caregiver must develop a strong positive coping mechanisms and adjustment to the changes arising from the role as caregiver. The purpose of this study to explore the caregiver’s experiences in caring for seniors with mild cognitive impairment as well as supporting and inhibiting factors. Methode: This study was a qualitative study ,descriptive and phenomenology research. Data collection taken by in-depth interviews and observation methodes. Participants are 6 caregivers elderly who have memory loss and 1 cadres Posyandu as key informants in Puskesmas Beji, Depok North.
Results : 1) The caregiver responses that include perception, coping mechanisms, hope, meaning and impact of the experience of the role. 2) Conduct caregiver that includes observation of symptoms of memory loss elderly and care for the elderly activity 3) Factors supporting and 4) health services required for the elderly. It can be concluded that the caregiver experience varies greatly, with the responses, impacts, reinforcing factors and inhibitors are different. Caregiver is the risk groups that need support and intervention from the public and health care workers.
